The Winter Skin Diaries finale is here! Sad times!
I’ve had an amazing time over the last four weeks talking about all my favourite things!
So as it’s the finale and having listened to the feedback I’ve been getting this week, we’re going to be talking tips and tricks for winter skin.
During my years of coming up in the world as a beauty therapist and make-up artist I’ve come across some outlandish advice. The advice has been good, bad and definitely ugly! LOL Despite some of the crazy things I have come across in my career the has been some stellar advice that I think is great for winter skin and just in general. So this serves as a little recap as well as some little nuggets for you to keep forever!
10 Everlasting Tips for Winter Skin! ( And Skin in General)
#1 Don’t be afraid to change it up!
I’ve come across so many clients who have mental brand or product allegiance and I often wonder why. If you are using products that aren’t working for you…I know this sounds totally basic but…STOP USING THEM! Lucky for us we live in a world where there is so much choice. You owe it to yourself to exercise your choice and get the best for you.
#2 Seek Professional Advice
Again, I’ve seen far too many people thinking that they have to go it alone, or that professional advice is too expensive to obtain. I call…*I won’t say that word!*…. eerrm cow faeces! What’s the point of trying to be an expert if you really don’t want to be. It’s ok to admit that you don’t have the time or patience to go and find information, learn it and then apply it. Why not just go to someone who has spent years becoming an expert.
#3 Look for sales before you buy products
So many skincare products are bought on impulse. The percentage of people who waste money on products they either don’t need or could have bought elsewhere for cheaper is astronomical. Try and save money but just delaying urges and gratification. It will save you money.
Extra Tip: If you shop in places like ASOS, use any discount codes that you get! 20% off never hurt anybody!
#4 Try not to over complicate things with your skincare.
So this is where I bring out the good old acronym K.I.S.S – Keep It Simple Stupid! Don’t over complicate your regime by trying to solve all your problems with loads of products. Don’t handle more than two skin concerns at a time because it can make things unnecessarily overwhelming. If you are a product junkie this might be causing you more problems than it’s solving
#5 Get Rid of Old Products
Have you ever seen a shelf full of products that look like they’ve been there since 1999? Don’t be a hoarder. Keeping old products takes up space and more to the point using out of date products can have damning consequences for skin. Oils go rancid, things congeal and their chemical ratios and compositions change. Nothing can ruin products like light exposure, moisture, or oxygen can. Have a look for the sign below on your products and think back to when you actually bought it. If in doubt, throw it in the bin!
Exfoliation is your friend, especially in winter. Allowing dead skin to build up will exacerbate any dryness that you may be experiencing. If you aren’t experiencing any skin issues then just make sure that you exfoliate to keep your skin supple.
#7 Clean your mobile
I know you just thought ‘What?’…No seriously, clean your phone. Your mobile carries around so much bacteria from being everywhere, you put it on tables, on the floor, in your bag. It goes everywhere and so does the bacteria from every location it visits and then it TOUCHES YOUR FACE! Lovely jubbly….not! The lurgie on your phone needs to be banished regularly. Not just in winter but in life.
#8 Get Regular Facials
(This is the bit where I shamelessly plug my own business :-D) I need to make it clear to you that you are going to have your skin for life and the more you look after it, the longer it will stay healthy and useful. Even if you’re on a budget work out ways to at least try and have a facial every quarter. Your skin might not thank you now but later on in life when things start to go south, you’ll thank your lucky stars that you went and had all those facials. Check out our facials here and if you want anything bespoke pop us an email or give us a ring. Our contact details are on the right hand side.
#9 Nourish your skin from the inside out
It’s really important to nourish your skin by eating well and giving your skin an added boost of vitamins and minerals. In addition to eating well you can up the anti by taking supplements such as hair, skin and nail vitamins. Perfectil, Wellwoman and similar brands are great. Imedeen is said to the original ‘queen bee’ of skin supplements with noticeable change taking place quite quickly. My personal favourite is good old cod liver oil or fish oil. Not just for skin but for EVERYTHING! LOL! It stops your knees from creaking as well as making your skin look fabulous.
#10 Oil is your friend!
This may sound a little crazy and general but it’s true. Oil benefits your skin regardless of your skin type. It can keep your skin supple if it’s fine, hydrated if it isn’t and put moisture back in if you don’t have any. Coconut oil is a great all rounder so get your hands on some as soon as you can. Fractionated coconut oil is probably some of the best stuff around as you can mix it into lotions and use it as a mask for you hair.
So, this bring us to the end of our series! *sniff sniff*
